Who We Are

Deadpan Films formed in 2010, we produce award-winning Film and TV. Story telling is our craft, and we are equally at home creating high-end documentaries and narrative comedy dramas as we are with short-form promo work.

We are passionate about our work and believe that is reflected in our output. We have produced shows for a wide range of broadcasters including ITV, Channel 4, Sky Sports and UKTV.

A Deadpan production guarantees high production values and cutting edge filmmaking.

Tim Mackenzie-Smith:
(Writer/Director)

Tim started out in comedy, working on the likes of Trigger Happy TV, before moving into Sport in 2001 where he won numerous awards for short form promo work. He went freelance in 2006 and since then he has written and directed a number of short films (Downturn, Perfect State) whilst carving out a niche as a leading documentary maker. His impressive CV includes directing the critically acclaimed Keane & Vieira - Best of Enemies (ITV), series producing the award-winning Sports Life Stories (ITV), The Mavericks (ITV) and Rooney: The Man Behind the Goals (BBC).
Tim co-wrote Deadpan’s award-winning short film Perfect State (2014) with Ryan Philpott.
Tim and Ryan currently have a comedy-drama Vomit Comet and a comedy feature The Understudy in the latter stages of development.

Ryan Philpott:
(WRITER/PRESENTER/ ACTOR/ PRODUCER)

Ryan trained as an actor at LAMDA and the NYT.
As an actor, his highlights include PC Matthew Thyme in ITV’s Rosemary and Thyme and various stints in Eastenders, playing Sergeant Kenny Morris.
For TV he was a producer on ‘The Mavericks’ Series 1 &2 for ITV, has been both producer and the main presenter for The Disabled British Open, Sky Sports and Seve Day, Sky Sports.
As a script-writer, he teamed up with TalkSport’s Paul Hawksbee, co-writing the comedy England’s Greatest Footy Heroes/ Goals/ Gaffes for DAVE.
He co-wrote Deadpan’s award-winning short film Perfect State (2014) with Tim Mackenzie-Smith.
Ryan and Tim currently have a comedy-drama, Vomit Comet and a comedy feature The Understudy in the latter stages of development.

Jim Williams:
(Producer/Director)

Jim produced and directed the critically acclaimed ITV1 documentary Clough, which was nominated for a Grierson Award as 'Most Entertaining Documentary of the Year'. He has also produced and directed the 12-part documentary series UEFA Euro Story, Deadpan's award-winning The Forgotten Fruit, Cristiano Ronaldo – Footballing Superstar, Sports Life Stories and was series producer for the The Football Mavericks. Most recently he has Directed ITV’s RBS 6 Nations Opening Titles, The Darts Mavericks and was the Lead Features Producer for Channel 4's much lauded coverage of the Rio Paralympic Games.
He has also created high-profile campaigns for Timex, Cartier & Hennessy.

Matt Wyllie:
(Editor/Producer)

Matt's work has won a number of awards including Royal Television Society awards for Best Sports Creative Sequence in 2005 and Best Feature in 2007, as well as the Sportel Golden Podium award in 2008. In recent years Matt has specialised in feature documentaries including The Fight of their Lives, which was nominated for a BAFTA in 2012. In 2015 Steve McQueen: The Man & Les Mans premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and later went on to be long listed for an Oscar. Most recently he made the critically acclaimed feature The Fall for Passion Pictures. His other work includes the celebrated Deadpan trio of Sports Life Stories (ITV), Keane/Vieira: Best of Enemies (ITV) and Rooney: The Man Behind the Goals (BBC).
